As many have mentioned before on this forum, one way of passing on
values is through stories, and HP is a great place for folklore. For
example, apropos of Mariann's comment about renewal, a few years ago,
Bill and Dave were asked to participate in a ceremony naming their
famous garage a state historical site, thus keeping it in its current
(decrepit) state. Dave was quoted as saying that he was against
preserving the garage. He suggested instead that it be torn down and
replaced with a more modern and useful structure.

Lots of us often quote stories with little research as to the actual
fact. Once, Bill was asked if a particular, oft-mentioned event
actually happened. With a twinkle in his eye that showed his complete
understanding of the storytelling process, Bill replied, "Well, I
don't remember exactly, but it could have happened that way."
