As Rol has indicated, the fix must depend on the exact circumstances
surrounding this person's difficulty. The key is that bosses must act in
accordance with the Golden Rule in order to do what is best for the
organization and for the person.

If the boss is greedy or self-serving or just looking to best enhance the
organization's bottom line, the Golden Rule(GR) is the best path to
success in all of these. The GR requires that the boss treat the person
with great respect, compassion, loyalty, fairness, forgiveness and the
like values. To meet these, the boss would have to spend some time with
the person to find out what is really going on and then determine the best
way to help. Limits should not be placed on this endeavor since this would
not permit the boss to meet high standards.

The biggest payback is from those watching who will greatly appreciate the
effort, the obvious loyalty and compassion displayed by the boss. Wouldn't
you want to work in such a workplace or leave one which quickly cast the
person aside in their time of need?

I respectfully submit that the answer to all of these issues is the Golden
Rule, even to the extent of termination when all else fails and the person
is unable to function reasonably at any job or refuses reasonable help.

Regards, Joan
