Replying to LO8073 --

John Constantine's message certainly touches a responsive chord! I have
worked for my organization, an excellent one in which I take great pride,
for 20 years. Over that period I have seen many wonderful, enthusiastic
workers suddenly become "problems" and just as suddenly - if they
persisted and were survivors - become excellent once more as circumstances
changed.

Almost 10 years ago, our organization began to try Deming's Quality
Management Philosophy. We have persisted to this day; and ever so
gradually as we have learned about processes, systems, common and special
cause and teamwork, we have become more aware of how much the system
within which we work impacts on our personal effectiveness. I am not
saying that at times we still do not point the finger at the "problem"
employee, or try for the individual heroics; but it is better.

I try to remember (not always successfully) the impact of the larger
system on individual performance as I pursue the rest of my life.

Let me introduce myself. I have been reading this list with interest,
when I have time, for several months. I am Sue Staas, Quality Coordinator
at Delaware County Community College outside of Philadelphia. I am a
Baldrige Examiner and a fan of the Fifth Discipline. Our College has been
in a state of continuous learning and change since 1987. It has been, and
continues to be a roller coaster and an exhilarating experience.

I shall now retire to the fringes until something moves me again. Many
thanks to those of you who contribute! I appreciate the thought and
enthusiasm, and the respect that is shown one to another.
