I like Ben's thoughts which he and a friend wondered about over a recent
breakfast. Too strong a dependence on means might make a work group lose
sight of the goals.
I'll use your thoughts, Ben, in my High Performance Teams course. There, we
work for several days in a row on process, weaving in tools for reactive
problem solving like the Seven Step Model, Ishikawa and Language Processing
Method (LPM) diagrams, Paretos, etc.
Now all of these are fine and dandy, but unless your astrolab is used to
maintain a fix on your position realtive to your destination, these tools
could go for naught. The case study ("Team from Hell") which my participants
read about, underscores your concern.
Thanks for stating it so well.
Best regards,
