A person understands their leverage within a system by understanding the
structure of relationships [both formal and informal] that they are
embedded in. The pattern of ties surrounding a person can either
constrain or enhance the person's ability to influence and to get things
done. As we have discussed in other threads here [Informal Networks] it
is not always the formal ties that dominate. With informal relationships
it is not always the direct ties that matter most -- frequently the secret
to success/frustration lies in the indirect ties one or two steps away.
