Supervisors may only be necessary because there is no oversight view
provided. That is, if the oversight was available and "on display" would
anybody need a supervisor.
The role does not need to reside in a person. If it does, it will likely
get perverted. The function can be fully distributed by providing visuals
or other access so that those interested, including in particular those
whose work is being displayed, can be their own "supervision".
I think the word says what it means: a vision larger than the one of the
individuals involved. All that is required is to provide it. There is no
need to embody it and give someone authority or power.
