What does the phrase "self-evident truth" mean?
One example says, "we hold these truths to be self evident". Maybe it
means "evident to the speaker". Does "self" refer to the truth's
evidence of itself (so the "self" is not the observer; it's the thing
itself) or to the truth's evidence to the observer (the human "self")?
It seems to me that there is a problem with saying that there are no
self-evident truths because that itself seems like it might be one.
I'm not sure that people will corporately agree to guidelines that
are not thought to be true.
