Hi

Apologies for short notice. :) Please come to what promises to be a most
interesting event..

"Organisational Memory and Knowledge Management"

10.00 a.m., Thursday, 23 May 1996
The Britannia Court Conference Centre, 27 Britannia Street, London, WC1X 9JP

Organised by Team IT - The forum for computer supported co-operative work

How do organisations learn and how should they manage that knowledge?

The human being has no problem with learning, once a sensation or stimulus
has been experienced it is imprinted for ever in the human memory. Whether
the individual wishes to base future actions on that stored memory though
is another matter entirely. The human being though can pass that
knowledge around the body, the left hand always knows what the right hand
is doing.

Not so with organisations! Knowledge is kept with the knowledge holder, it
is frequently only distributed if necessary, and only to the people that
the knowledge holder thinks should have it. The left hand frequently does
NOT know what the right hand is doing.

The aim of these two presentations is to describe how an organisation can
store the experiences of its workforce, and how it can manage its
accumulated knowledge to benefit of all concerned.

Jeff Conklin, Chief Scientist and Co-founder of Corporate

Memory Systems, Inc., Memory Systems Design.

Dr. E. Jeffrey Conklin is Chief Scientist and co-founder of Corporate
Memory Systems, Inc., a company which produces groupware for project
teams. His survey paper on hypertext has become the standard reference in
the field. He is the co-designer of the gIBIS system, which has earned
international acclaim as a pioneering hypertext groupware tool for design
and planning. His presentation will be centred around how organisations
are overlooking the key asset of Informal Knowledge. This talk explores
the design of an organisational memory system that overcomes the barriers
to capturing informal knowledge. The key component of this design is the
use of a display system which captures the key issues and ideas during
meetings and creates shared understanding in a knowledge team. The talk
describes the QuestMap software system as a example of a display system
which uses hypertext to capture the thinking and learning in large,
complex projects. The talk ends with a few examples of this kind of
organizational memory system in action.
