If manager is to be replaced, maybe we can find something from
another field. Sports, sciences, dance, architecture, hotelling,
charity, (god forbid) government????
I'm more inclined to redefine manager but hopeful that someone will
come up with a word or phrase that we can use.
It may be that "manager" is too generic and we can accomplish what we
want by specialist phrases. My sense is that we are trying to label
something for easy notation and conversation but are losing what we
are after. (Remember HP and 1 on 1 vs "customers) Organisation designer, coach,
facilitator, architect, support, environment creator. Nope, I don't
think this is working.
Is it because we are trying to define a role rather than merely make
accountabilities clear? If we asked "What are you accountable for?"
and didn't accept "managing ....." as part fo the response, then
maybe we just wouldn't need the word OR a replacement.
That will make for some awkward phrases and sentences and linguistic
structures for a while but maybe not for very long and maybe it would
be worth it.
