>Warfield's data about the universities says to me, vividly: these places
are no longer relevant. Two hundred years ago they trained our best young
into our best culture. Now what do they do? And who or what, now and in
the future, will do what the universities are no longer doing?

Great question, By coincidence I read an article today about a man who
gave a paper to a UK conference about considering why not abolish
universities. [he was an academic sociologist and the conference was of
academic sociologists - they found the idea regretable for many reasons
and I left the newspaper on the train].

It is [or it seems to me] a good question. Do we need universities any
more than we need temples to the delphic oracle?. They will fight to
survive but then what institution didn't?
