Replying to LO6678 --

Reading John Warfield's 8-bullet summary of the appalling changes since
1914, I revise my estimates of the magnitude of the current revolution.
For several years I've been saying "this is the biggest thing to happen
since the end of the Middle Ages."

Nah. Let's talk about the fall of the Roman Empire instead.

Of course I'm not joking. The realignment of social forces that is
happening right now (this group, and the medium that makes it possible, is
one instance) is of apocalyptic scope and comprehensiveness.

I think it's a characteristic of such changes that many of the old names
and structures only seem to survive; their roles and internal realities
are transformed. Warfield's data about the universities says to me,
vividly: these places are no longer relevant. Two hundred years ago they
trained our best young into our best culture. Now what do they do? And
who or what, now and in the future, will do what the universities are no
longer doing?
