So true. In a recent post someone defined a leader as someone who went
into an unknown. A leader is much more, (s)he goes first into the unknown
but knowing that smart people with the right capabilities are ready to
come with him/her. These are not members of the herd, they to are
leaders, members of a team ready to collaborate with each other. Their
goal -- often to successfully compete with other teams to attain some
prize (a new contract?).

Certainly not a cowboy as the original metaphor used the noun. Besides,
the life of a cowboy is not at all as colorful and machismo as myth would
have us believe. It is an honorable, hardworking worthy craft that I
would not at all belittle.

Thanks Terri, for giving me a chance to spout off a bit.
