Dave Birren's post is at the heart of an important issue here. I
especially appreciated the quote from Thomas Moore (below). This says a
lot that I can't completely interpret, but one thing is this. If we are
to learn and change, then we have to simultaneously keep one eye focused
on the ideal future state and one eye coldly cocked on the current
reality. Only by having a clear view of both can we build the creative
tension that leads to learning and change.

It is not easy to 'see' the current reality in complex, systemic
situations. Those glasses have not been invented yet. Trying to see and
understand current reality is a struggle that never ends.

Thomas Moore as quoted by Dave Birren: "We want to sidestep negative
moods and emotion, bad life choices and unhealthy habits. But if our
purpose is to first observe the soul as it is, then we may have to discard
the salvational wish and find deeper respect for what is actually there.
By trying to avoid human mistakes and failure, we move beyond the reach of
the soul."
