Replying to LO4906

Elaine originally asked "What about SCANS or competency based assessment ,
will they be a basis for different testing?"

Rol replied: "I am unfamiliar with SCANS, but competency-based testing is
essential.... We have to learn about thinking, estimating,
communicating, and so forth. Skills that do not get significant attention
yet. "

Rol and interested others,

You can find out about SCANS at a site run by ADVANCE Educational Spectrums:

There are statements about copying material at the site, so I didn't. I
I'll look for copiable info. at ERIC or US government site. I'd like to
hear what people have to say about the work of the Secretary's Commission
on Achieving Necessary Skills (SCANS), in defining the skills needed for
employment. There has been a lot written, I don't know how much has been
done.

I find out about this kind of thing from a listserv called: VOCNET. Info
attached. I received from the US a great little poster on foundation
skills, that some of you may be interested in.

Subject: New Internet Site-SCANS/Skills/STW

I thought you might be interested in taking a look at a new Internet site
that focuses on Workforce Development, SCANS Skills, School-to-Work, Skill
Development software and training tools, Business-Education Partnerships,
Training, and other topics near and dear to our hearts!

The site also links to some great Internet resources on training, skills,
education, government, grant resources, etc.
