You make a good point. It's probably insufficient to engender a
"life-long learning" mentality if it is directed toward only the task
assignments that are currently at hand.
I think I often over compensate in my descriptions because of the
industrial venue in which I spend most of my time. Managers typically
want to hear how something or other is going to affect the workplace.
