John Woods mentions Maslow's hierarchy in response to David E.
Birren's motivation twist:

> We must pay attention to survival needs before we can move up the
> hierarchy. The wonderful thing about self aware beings is that they can
> realize this about themselves, allowing them to deal with these survival
> needs better so they can move up to fulfill higher level psychological
> needs.

There's millions of people who are surviving quite well today, and they
are self aware being, but they aren't really interested or 'motivated' to
fulfill higher level psychological needs. They are comfortable watching
the TV and living in their comfort zones. Sure they want to be successful
and become more, but they don't have any role models or formulas to get
them out of their current mode.

I'd be more interested in hearing how we can motivate people to invest in
themselves and start fulfilling higher level psychological needs.
