Are you familiar with the work of Elliott Jaques? He is controversial (to
put it mildly!) but he has addressed the issue you raise head on and in a
rather non-conventional way. His books are generally available and he has
written a number of articles (as have others about his work). He also
wrote an article for the _Harvard Business Review_ that ruffled quite a
few feathers! (Jaques, Eliott. 1990. In Praise of Hierarchy, Harvard
Business Review (January-February):127-133.) If you need help with a basic
bibliography, let me know and I'll be glad to help.
