On theories:

First let me say this: theories do not describe options. They explain how
the world seems to work in a variety of contexts from a human perspective.
To the degree that we discover/uncover/create theories that do a pretty
good job of mirroring reality, we'll be reasonably successful as a part of
that reality. To the degree we make mistakes (and that's one way we
learn), we discover the flaws in our theories. Our mission is to get
things right (as expressed in our theories). Our burden is to know we'll
never quite do that. (Perhaps that's a theory statement itself).
