Replying to LO3640 --

Bruce says that his organization works for industrial democracy, and with
unions.

That reminded me of a project done by my friend Dr. James T. C. Wright, of
the Department of Administration, University of Sao Paulo, Brazil. He has
been a practitioner of "Interactive Management" for about 15 years. A few
years back he took on a project dealing with the port of Santos in Brazil.

This port was in bad shape, poorly managed, and very unproductive.

He proposed something that amazed everyone. He would work with the
longshoremen and ask them to redesign port operations.

Interactive Management is a highly participative management system that is
to be used intermittenly to deal with complexity.

The longshoremen produced a new design for management and operation of the
Port of Santos. Management was flabbergasted with the quality of the
product.

If you want more information, contact Dr. Wright at USP.
