Speaking of coining words...and hoping they're meaningful and
stick--yesterday when I introduced myself and described my interests, I
used the word "supradisciplinary." It occurred to me a couple of years
ago, I've used it in the title of an article, and in the subtitle of a
recent book. I see it as a tool for helping break through the arbitrary
"ceiling" on the range of perceived alternatives fixed so rigidly in place
for the last century by the familiar words "disciplinary,"
"interdisciplinary," "trans-disciplinary," and "cross-disciplinary."
But you always wonder if it works, and, if so, how, and why.
