Here's another take on "manipulation". It is essentially a unilateral
attempt to change some else's behavior (or mind). That sets up a
power-based relationship with the manipulator holding the power. This in
turn establishes the manipulatee as the underdog. No one likes that.

"Influence", on the other hand, is (or can be) respectful and takes into
at least some account the value of the person being influenced (or
sometimes it's really manipulation with a nice face put on it). That goes
a long way to making change palatable.

Now I hope this is the last word on the subject. I'm feeling
manipulated... :)
