On collective cognition, Cindy Willis's note about Wegner takes us back to
Halbwachs. See his classic "On collective memory" reprinted by University
of Chicago Press in 1992. Halbwachs was a student of Durkheim's, so both
considered 'social facts' to be the essence of the social process, and was
interested in how they were maintained. He took them to be embedded in
social practices. For a modern interpretation see Connerton (1989) "How
societies remember" Cambridge UP.

There is a group of people who have been writing about collective memory
and about collective knowledge and learning. There will be a volume
forthcoming from Sage titled "Managerial and Organizational cognition"
edited by Colin Eden and Beverly Winterscheid.

I also published a piece about this in Managerial Learning Vol 25 no 3 pp.
387-412, 1194 called 'Knowing, Managing and Learning: A dynamic managerial
epistemology' that might be of passing interest to those that believe that
there is a significant difference between organizations and individuals as
learning entities.
