The problem of how to store corporate knowledge, what you call a
"Corporate Knowledge Repository", is also described as how to build a
corporate memory.

One intersting example I met is from a large European pharmaceutical
corpo- ration, which has a tablet being more than 100 old. Of course the
production recipe has changed from time to time. The interesting fact is
that going back through the annals of the product development department
it was found that some kinds of experiments seems to be repeated approx.
every 25 years. It seems that the departments memory had a length of that
(old employee retiring or whatever the reason).

Building a corporate memory is obviously interesting to IT people.
Especially knowledge based techniques (also called AI) seems appropriate.
Our company has been involved in such activities, but there is still a
long way to go before an overviewable, auditable knowledge base can be
constructed. We consider setting up an EEC funded project on this - if
any Europeans reading this is interested.

Besides IT there might be other sciences (cognitive research?) working on
this problem ?
