Replying to LO344 --

Thanks for your "rambling!" Your questions and comments rang true to me
and to the difficulty of transforming an institution (a college) that has
been traditionally devoted to "preserving knowledge" much more than to
"extending" learning. While there is certainly much to value in
preservation and detailed, focused inquiry, it does not follow that all
aspects of a college or university should reflect the boundaries and
fragmentation that comes with specialization.

Above all, the need to "walk our talk" is an everpresent obligation for us all.
Unfortunately, it always seems easier for me to "teach" about something
than it is to "live" it. We have a lot to learn from the world of
commerce about the need to "act" as well as to "reflect". Hopefully we
can work towards a dynamic balance of the two (and of the myriad of other
possible responses!)

Thanks for the reminder.
