Yeah, thanks for the reply. I sort of figured you must have meant something
like that; now it's on the record.

There really are *techniques* in the old guy, aren't there. One that I
particularly am impressed by is when Socrates defuses potential
confrontations by invoking an imaginary third party who becomes equally
critical of both himself and his interlocutor. (At the end of the
Protagoras he imagines "the argument" as itself a living entity, scolding
first himself and then Protagoras for their lack of respect.)

It's a technique I've used in a lot of different situations.
