Ever course in teaching or public speaking I've taken stresses that
what you, as a speaker, mean by certain words may not be what the
audience means. I say "I love hot food." To me, "hot" food may
mean anything more spicy than a mashed potato. To my Indian friend
Pankaj, "hot" may mean anything more spicy than hydrochloric acid.
"Hot" is simply a metaphor for the direct experience.

Listen closely and you'll discover metaphor all over the place. "We
really need to hit a home run with this one." "I hope you're well
on the road to recovery." Etc.
