In response to William Fulkerson's note on 1/7/95:

The Butterfly metaphor is a great encouragement that
attempting some change at a small level will have some
influence on the larger system.

I work for a fortune 500 company contracted to DOE.
Partnering with my local DOE liaison, we were able to change
the direction of the entire DOE complex on a very complex
problem. It took 9 months of persistence, but we did it.
(It also convinced me absolutley that less government is
is our only hope for the future !)

Meg Wheatley frames this "wing flapping" in another way.
She refers to a universal, invisible field that is
influenced by small changes and that influences the larger
system. I kept refering to this during our nine month
ordeal. I consider it one of my top accomplishments for
1994 and it will save tremndous time in the long run. Yet,
the issue was so complex and soft/systemic in nature, no one
other than myself and my liaison and a few others realize
the impact of the change.
