Abilities and Interests

I have a wide variety of interests and talents. They make me a good consultant, particularly in the area of design, whether it's web page design or user interface design. Areas I'm interested in consulting on include: Here is a more specific summary of my skills:

Writer

I have written a book (with coauthors Jeff Kovel and Jay Gabin). It's about Lotus Notes, and it's called The Lotus Notes Idea Book. It was released by Addison Wesley in December '95. Look for it!

I am writing a book about life as an expatriate on the French Riviera. The drafts/raw material appear here every week in the form of a diary.

I also occasionally write for magazines -- I have written for Dr. Dobbs Journal, PC Techniques, Byte, and was a contributing editor for the late and occasionally lamented PC Tech Journal.

Web Page Designer

As you can see from this site, I like to design web pages, and I think I do it well. At this stage, I still haven't found anyone else's editor that has a couple of key features I built into my own (like an image browser that puts height and width parameters in), so I still use the one I wrote in VB a while ago. It's a bit crude, but it works. Besides my own site, I have a couple of other clients:

Human Interface Designer

I am a specialist in user interface design, development, and testing. I am particularly good at developing understandable and consistent user interfaces for complex environments. I was the user interface designer for Lotus Notes ViP, which is an application development environment for developing applications that integrate Notes and other enterprise data. I have also worked as a consultant on the design of several products in the area of educational software.

Software Developer

I am a software developer and architect with 18 years of experience doing software development, mostly but not exclusively on the PC in Windows. I'm not a language bigot; I try to work in the highest-level language suitable to the task. I use everything from YACC and LEX, to Java, C, C++, Smalltalk, Visual Basic, or assembler to handle the task. I'm a fan of object-oriented programming and good development processes. And I'm just now becoming a fan of Borland's Delphi. Nice product.

Entrepreneur

I run my own business, and occasionally consult. I am developing an educational software product / game that I'm not going to say any more about until it's ready.
