Rome
By the time we got to Rome, we had seen about all the frescos and museums we wanted to see for a while.  We would always stop to admire mosaics, of course, but we were ready to come home.  The Vatican Museum was only about half open. The renovations have been extensive and very well done.  The rentable headphones are great!

What was exciting about Rome were the ruins.  It was like walking beside ghosts you almost knew.  Egypt's influence was startling.

These two photos are of the excavation of the Temple of the Vestal Virgins.  Appropriately, the excavators were young women - archaeology students, probably.  They didn't answer when asked if they were the temple's virgins.

This is the Coliseum in Rome and the stray/feral cats of the Coliseum with a lady who feeds them.  There were several ruins in the city that had become the homes of the cats, each with a group of people to feed them and try to find homes for them.  The cats look healthy and spend much time sunning themselves on ancient Roman statue and the remains of glorious buildings.
