J-MADE DIGEST #28

Hi, Everyone,

You may have thought we vanished, but in fact everyone's loom's have been working so well that there has been little to talk about.  This issue has two topics:

Adjusting the height of the shafts on J-comps
Sale on J-made and J-comp looms

From: Tom Vogl

My J-comp is now five years old and having just woven off 20 yards of shirting, I decided that it was time to give it a good dose of preventive maintenance.

In addition to wiping down all the metal shafts including those on top of the tie-up box with an oily cloth (we live in a high humidity area) I also oiled the bearings on the pulley sheaves that carry the airplane cables around the tie-up box.  It is worth paying particular attention to the ones that carry the cables between the treadles and making sure the bearings are sound. (I need to replace several.)

I talked to Dale about the proper adjustment of the shafts.  For the record, here is how they should be adjusted:

Consider a line connecting the upper surface of the breast beam to the upper surface of the back beam.  The middle of the eyes on the heddles of shaft #1 (closest to the front of the loom) should be 2" below that line.  The middle of the eyes on shaft # 16 should be 3" below that line, and the shafts between should line up in between # 1 and # 16.  Shafts beyond #16 should continue on that line. Cheers,
Tom.
