Crocheted Curtain Pulls & Ornaments by Katherine Long

The ornaments are all based on old curtain pull patterns, worked around a plastic ring.  They are much faster to make than snowflakes!  And a lot more forgiving in that ruffles look nice, they don't need blocking and multi colors work well.  Although I make the more elaborate pineapple pattern ones, simple ones are very effective.  SC closely around any size ring (using fingering weight wool or chenille for a 1 1/2 inch ring,  #10 cotton for around a 1" inch ring, and tatting cotton for 1/2 inch ring).  Second row, dc, ch, skip space, dc all around, Third row half-double crochet.  And you can see lots of variations are very easy to incorporate in the basic pattern. Here is a more formal pattern for a Puff Stitch Shade Pull which is found in a number a pattern books, using a 3/4" ring and a #8 hook. Work 36 sc over ring & join to 1st sc. 2nd Round.  Ch 3, thread over hook, insert in same space, pull loop through and up the length of a dc, thread over hook, insert in same space, pull loop through and up the same length, thread over and pull through all loops but 2, thread over and pull through 2 loops on hook, ** ch 3, skip 1 sc, puff st in next sc (puff st: thread over hook, insert in st, pull loop through and up the length of a dc, * thread over hook, insert in same space, pull up a loop the same length, repeat from * once, thread over and pull through all loops but 2, thread over and pull through both loops), repeat from ** all around, ch 3, join in 1st puff st. 3rd round: Sl st into loop, * ch 3, dc in same space, ch 2, sl st in top of dc for picot, ch 3, sl st in next loop, repeat from * all around, do not cut thread, ch about 150 for cord, join in same space, cut thread. (for an ornament I don't make that long a cord).  The purple and red pull at the bottom center of the photo is an example of the Puff Stitch Shade Pull.

I don't make these to sell, but there are usually some for sale on eBay.  Another alternative is to contact members of the various local knitting clubs, some of their members undoubtly crochet.  A local yarn store will probably be able to tell you who to call or may even know crocheters. Simple pulls are quick to make, but the complicated patterns take time.  I wouldn't make a complicated one that takes an hour or so to make for less than $10 a piece.  You will see the ones on eBay are much cheaper, but you take pot luck with designs and colors.
