| The Adventurous Crocheter, by Delia Brock & Lorraine Bodger, Simon & Schuster, New York, 1972, SBN 671211889, LC 75-189749 |
|
Crochet basics and the philosophy of following general instructions
rather than a line by line pattern. Chapters on belts, purses, wallets
& change purses, sweaters, afghans, jewelry, appliques & fringes.
The sweater chapter is wonderful! It has how to make one, two and three piece sweaters to fit any body, any weight yarn. The sweaters are fitted with a variety of necklines and sleeves. Not just plain rectangles sewn together. The afghan chapter has a very nice granny square short-sleeeved sweater, again to fit any body. Lots of line drawing illustrations. This is an essential book!

| One-Piece Knits That Fit: how to knit and crochet one-piece garmets, by Margaret Hubert, Van Nostrand Reinhold Company, New York, 1978, ISBN 0442235674, LC 78-17516 |

|
The title is deceptive because half the book is knit and half crochet.
Instructions for classic sweaters in both knit & crochet, each in sizes
from child to XL adult, each in sport, worsted & bulky weight yarn.
One piece designs, crocheted top-to-bottom and bottom-to-top. Lots of photos.
Paid $7 |

Chapters by Lillian Bailey, Linda Osborne Blood, Nan Jennes Brown,
Judith Copeland, Del Pitt Feldman, Jacqueline Henderson, Arlene Mintzer,
Barbara Muccio.
I bought the book for the chapter on modular crochet by Copeland. It has wonderful instructions on how to crochet pullovers for any size body, using any size yarn based on making rectangles and sewing them together. The photos are very 70s looking, but the instructions are timeless.

| Modular Crochet, by Judith Copeland |

This is a splendid book! It just came, so I have not made anything out of it yet, but the instructions look clear, the patterns are classic, and are designed for infants to adults. Pullovers are crocheted vertically, in rectangles that are put together. Paid $26 |
| Louisa Calder's Creative Crochet, by Louisa Calder & Mary Konior, Viking Press, New York, 1979, ISBN 0670442038 |

General instructions and insipiration for purses, neckties, hats, belts, buttons, mittens, tea cozies, hairbands, bracelets, cushion covers, slippers, baby boots, rugs, wall hangings. I love the hat pattern. |
| Peter Max Book of Crochet |

I don't have this book yet. Reliable sources say it is mostly color changes in the style of Peter Max, rather than freeform crochet. |
| The Crochet Workbook, by Sylvia Cosh & James Walters, St. Martin's Press, New York, 1989, ISBN 0312040326 |
![]() |
Very good explanation of freeform crochet and scrumbling. Diagrams are in symbol crochet. |
| Illustrated Patchwork Crochet: Contemporary Granny Squares for Clothing and Home Decorating, by Bella Scharf, Butterick Publishing, New York, 1976 |
![]() |
Mostly modular crochet. There are standard directions on how to make granny squares. The book has specific projects and general directions on how to turn granny squares in to clothing. There are short chapters on freeform granny square creations and mixed media granny squares. |
| Patchwork Crochet: The Granny Square Updated, by Jackie Shapiro & Dinah Markman, Workman Publishing Company, New York, 1971. |
![]() |
Modular crochet. This booklet has more "row by row" instructions than I like, and the fashions are solidly in the '60s. But there is interesting ideas on how to put grannies together. |
