Chicken Stories

April 12, 1999

Hi!
The baby chicks arrived at 8:05 this morning.  I met them at the
Vineyard Haven post office, where the mail is divided to go all over the
island.  The truck labeled "West Tisbury" was making a huge cheeping
racket that echoed througout the loading dock and the West Tisbury
driver was very relieved to see me and and hand me my box of chicks.
There are 25 of them and I think at least 20 will make it - which is
pretty good odds for shipped chicks.  Tom has set me and the chicks up
in the basement.  They have starter mash and water and a hot lamp, I
have a computer, a book, a beer, cheese and crackers.  We are all happy
and it is lots of fun to watch little beasts learn.  Most have learned
that the ice cube tray-water dish is not a bath and most have learned
how to get out from right under the hot lamp hover if they get too hot.
Those are important basics for these little fluffs.  I could send you
more chick pics, but won't clog up your inbox unless you say you want
more!  The fluffs have just about eaten up all their starter mash and
I'd better go mix up more.
