Interested in improving your reporting and editing skills while getting a taste of life in our nation's capital? Would you like to sit in on a Congressional hearing and write about it for thousands of journalists across the country? The Student Press Law Center in Washington, D.C., has internship positions available each school semester and during the summer for undergraduate and graduate students with experience in journalism. The SPLC is the only national organization devoted exclusively to protecting the free press rights of high school and college journalists. The Center serves as a source of legal advice and information for student journalists and the public, answering questions on subjects ranging from libel and invasion of privacy to access to meetings or records and censorship. The SPLC responds to over 1,000 legal requests per year and files friend-of-the-court briefs in state supreme courts, federal courts of appeals and the United States Supreme Court. Journalism interns at the SPLC produce the Report, the Center's thrice-yearly magazine that chronicles student press cases and controversies and related legislation from around the country. The interns serve as editors of the magazine, soliciting illustrations, completing computer desk- top layout and writing headlines in addition to their primary role of reporting and writing news stories. In recent years, interns have followed the efforts of state legislatures around the country to pass laws overcoming the Supreme Court's decision in the case Hazelwood School District v. Kuhlmeier, in which the Court limited the First Amendment rights of high school journalists. Interns also participate in the seminar series conducted by the SPLC and the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press. Topics of the seminars range from confidential sources to restrictions on advertising in the media, and speakers have included NBC News reporter Carl Stern and former Presidential Press Secretary Jody Powell. SPLC internships are non-paying, but full-time interns receive a living expense stipend of $750. Many interns arrange to receive academic credit from their college or university. Applications for full and part-time interns are accepted. If you are interested in applying, send a resume, the names and telephone numbers of two references, samples of your writing, clips and a cover letter describing your interest in working for the Student Press Law Center. Hiring decisions are made on a rotating basis, so early applications are encouraged. Send your application to: Mark Goodman, Executive Director Student Press Law Center 1101 Wilson Blvd. Arlington, VA 22209 Note: Applicants interested in a Fall 1995 position are encouraged to submit their applications ASAP. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= STUDENT PRESS LAW CENTER 1101 Wilson Blvd., Suite 1910, Arlington, VA 22209 (703) 807-1904 e-mail: splc@capaccess.org
