My name is Paul and I'm with The Epic from Lynbrook High School in San Jose. Several months ago, we were invited by the Estonia Ministry of Culture and Education to host a journalism workshop there to teach high school teachers and students the ABCs of modern journalism. To our knowledge, this is the first time something of this nature and scope has ever been attempted. After the workshop, we are hoping to continue the relationship via an Internet advisory bridge program. Fortunately, the local media began covering the project this week. Unfortunately, there are still needs to be met. Two students need funding for air fare to Estonia, and we are still looking for donations for computers, software, printers, etc. If you feel you might be able to help in any/some way (nothing is too small or too insignificant, nor too large), please read the release below and feel free to write or call with any questions you might have. Thank you for your time. ****Begin net release**** Something exciting is happening, and we need your help! How often do teenagers get a chance to travel halfway across the world in the name of international goodwill, democracy, and education? Not very often, but his summer, two teenagers and two adults will be embarking on a journey to Estonia where they will be actively taking a role in the development of the country's journalism program. Moreover, they'll be working right at the roots of the Tree of Knowledge, with 60 students and teachers from local high schools across Estonia. With your help, they'll be able to expand the team to four or more students. Please take the time to read the letter below, and if you would like to respond, please feel free to write to us at plee@kn.pacbell.com or call the staff at (408)255-4641. And while you're at it, why not visit our web site? http://155.241.13.70/ Thank you. ****Begin press release**** Lynbrook High School 1280 Johnson Avenue San Jose, CA 95129 (408) 255-4641 April 12, 1995 Dear Sirs, Madam: Lynbrook Journalism Adviser, Arnetta Garcin, has received an invitation issued by the State Board of Education, Estonia, to conduct a 10-day institute designed to introduce both teachers and students to journalism education in the secondary and university schools. In the invitation, the Estonia delegation stated, "We believe that it is necessary to develop a strong journalism curriculum within our educational system to preserve and maintain our fledgling democracy." The invitation, received in October, 1994, was prompted by one of Mrs. Garcin's former journalism students, William Radecki, who is currently working with the State Board of Education in the newly independent Baltic republic, Estonia, as part of the special projects division. To this purpose, we are contacting all organizations who would like to support the students in this exceptional educational experience. Unquestionably, a well-developed free press serves as a cornerstone of a modern democracy, thus our mission becomes an extraordinary opportunity to effect global cooperation through the media. Donations will be used to fund additional costs needed to support this educational program. We are soliciting journalism textbooks which can be given to the teachers and students in Estonia during the Institute; desktop publishing equipment to be used in training the students and teachers in the area of newspaper production; communications equipment, as we would like to establish an Internet link with this group to continue to provide support and exchange information upon our return; and funding for air fare and living expenses which would allow additional students, at least two, to participate. Mrs. Garcin will take two Lynbrook journalism students, seniors Paul Lee and Boris Bershteyn, both members of The Epic staff, to assist these teachers and students in developing a journalism curriculum which will address their goals in developing a responsible, free press to safeguard a democratic government. "The prospect of introducing journalism education to a country which is in the process of entirely restructuring its political and social systems is so exciting," states Garcin. "For the students who accompany me, this will be an educational experience of a life-time. We hope to learn as much as we share, and we will continue to provide support via the Internet in the coming years." The team would like to include additional students, at least two more, if donations can be raised. Funding of approximately $1,600 must be raised for each additional student wishing to participate, as the State Board of Education of Estonia, given its limited resources, will fund two teachers and two students. "No words can describe my anticipation towards this awesome opportunity to befriend Estonia and fellow students," states Lee, who participated in the San Jose Education Network program this past summer, sponsored by Mayor Susan Hammer. "Our ability to bring skills acquired at school to the global arena is a celebration of American education," adds Bershteyn. Mrs. Garcin has also extended an invitation to Mr. James Shuman, from Modesto, California, the former President of the Journalism Education Association of Northern California, (JEANC) to assist her in inservicing the teaching staff during the institute, as the Estonian group requested an additional teacher. All are very excited in anticipation of the forthcoming trip, scheduled to run August 1 through 10. The group will depart on July 22 as the Estonian group has requested that they arrive a week prior to the institute to visit local publications and the university program. In light of our mission's potential to enrich the worldwide appeal of the media, and to assist a nation in developing and maintaining a healthy democracy supported by a free and responsible press, we ask your generous assistance in contributing funds or computer hardware/software toward this workshop. We also seek your assistance in publicizing our workshop and supporting its goals. You may contact the adviser, Arnetta Garcin, at (408) 255-4641 [w], or at (408) 378-4463. Donations may be made out to: LHS Quill & Scroll Journalism Honor Society (Lynbrook High School). Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact us. We will be most happy to visit your organization to make a personal presentation upon request. Sincerely, Arnetta L.
