The news is shallow and fairly one-sided, and In all fairness, it should be noted that for some reason The Sagamore is a very popular paper...perhaps because of their sports coverage. We often get negative feedback on Cadence, but it is so poorly articulated that it is useless to us (ie. "Your paper sucks. You should be on the Sag.) >>You mentioned a "school regulation" that required you to have an FA. What is >>this? What is the regulation, exactly? What would happen if you didn't comply? In fact, the first "alternative" paper at our school, the Amaranth (from whose defectors Cadence first arose) now is without an advisor. Their founder and long-time financial supporter quit because of all the headaches that kept arising, and the paper hasn't had an advisor since. There have been no consequences to the paper. We don't really have any issues as far as not being allowed at activity fairs, etc. One of the reasons is that we live in a very liberal community, and whenever the administration has tried censoring papers in the past it's proven to be quite a pain for them. Also, our principal (called a headmaster for reasons of pretension) likes to tell 8th grade parents "Our school is so active it has three newspapers! You won't find that at a private school!". Perhaps the best way of describing the differences between us and the school-funded paper is this anecdote: Recently one of our sports reporters wrote a negative, but completely accurate, article on the baseball team. The coach responded in two ways: 1. Assaulting our reporter 2. Writing an article for the Sagamore about how our paper didn't support school spirit. -- Noah Schaffer Brookline MA Personal mail: bj193@yfn.ysu.edu Newspaper Feedback: cadence@world.std.com
