Java Beans Development

This two- or three-day lecture/lab hands-on course covers JavaBeans development using Sun's Beans Development Kit (BDK), explaining the design principles and objectives, illustrating JavaBeans usage and management, and showing how to benefit from using JavaBeans to develop reusable components. The class exercises address realistic programming problems and reinforce the lecture material. JavaBeans and the JDK allow you to develop and test portable, platform independent, software components, which can be integrated, without code changes, into any environment supporting the Java language. Components can be developed once, packaged into JAR files, and run anywhere. The course starts with an overview that creates and tests a simple Bean and uses the BeanBox to create an applet in order to illustrate the basic concepts. Subsequently, there is in-depth treatment of properties, events, customization, persistence, introspection, and packaging. JavaBeans features are motivated and described in terms of common programming problems, and the ability to provide platform-independent solutions to these problems is emphasized. Prerequisites: Knowledge of C is a must, and prior knowledge of C++ or Java is a plus. Java basics are covered as part of the course. Equipment: The exercises can be performed on Windows, Solaris, Linux, or nearly any UNIX machine that supports Java. Software: The Java Development Kit (JDK) and Beans Development Kit (BDK) are downloaded from Sun. Microsoft Visual J++ 6.0 is recommended but not essential if you are running on Windows.
