red sox nation

September 26, 2004

OK, so I have a full blown case of Red Sox Mood Disorder. For those unfamiliar with this malady, it involves rapid mood swings from mania when they beat the pinstripes of evil to despair when they lose to the pinstripes of evil.

Friday night, I watched Petey and the Sox go down to defeat and sank into a funk. What the heck is wrong with Petey? He can't beat the pinstriped ones for love nor money nor whatever other cliche you can think of.

Last night I made corn chowder for a cozy evening with Nancy and the Red Sox on TV. Wakefield's knuckleball was dancing, especially early on. When the Red Sox broke it open and just kept scoring more and more runs I was totally manic. I didn't even realize that the woman who looked like Szivlia in the left field stands where that double bounced in was in fact Szilvia. BiB, the Ex-Ex-Pat, was trying to catch it but didn't get it.

This morning in Red Sox Nation it was up early for brunch at La Madre's with the Ex-Ex-Pat and Szilvia and most of the family except the Beach Boys who are in Hawaii for my brother-in-law's sister's wedding. Everybody was manically talking baseball. When the Red Sox beat the Yankees this late in the season, even if there's only an outside chance at catching them for the division title, there is nothing else to talk about in Red Sox Nation. For once, the chat round the table was 90% baseball and only 10% Iraq.

Then it was back to my place to watch this afternoon's game as Nancy and I had invited Ned over to watch it with us. A fun day in Red Sox Nation is when they convincingly clobber the pinstriped ones, which they did. Of course, it was pretty clear Torre thought the game didn't matter all that much else he would not have started Kevin Brown who clearly is not ready to pitch yet. In a fight between a pitcher and a wall, the wall always wins. Brown obviously knows that 'cause he fought the wall with his glove hand, but it's still idiotic. And I still think Joe Torre was toying with Red Sox Nation.

I also had a chance to show Ned the Michael Warren book of bird paintings, Shorelines, which I bought last weekend at the benefit auction for the Newburyport Public Library. Also fed him and ourselves some of Andrea's and La Madre's homebaked cookies.
