signs of spring

March 19, 2003

Besides the redwinged blackbirds that are suddenly everywhere,a sure sign of spring is the convoy of fried dough trucks and carnival rides rumbling down Bridge Rd. from the weird carnival ride storage place. Just a week ago they were all dingy and stuck behind berms of ancient accumulated snow. Today they are scrubbed clean and headed south, west and north. If they headed east they would be in the Gulf of Maine selling fried dough to the fishes. The storage lot looks oddly sparse.

And about those redwinged blackbirds, I do mean they are everywhere. A few days ago Nancy and I were searching for them and were thrilled to find three. But today seems to be arrival day! A flock of grackles and redwinged blackbirds descended on the marsh behind the cat shelter when I pulled in there to pick up some newsletter articles. I counted 36 redwinged blackbirds behind Angelina's when I stopped for lunch. Even back at my house, there were suddenly redwinged blackbirds in every tree. They're baaack!

Not exactly a sign of spring, but a sign of something good, Stallone got adopted. Apparently a woman came in who likes him and understands that he might bite and even knows how to deal with it. I suspect that in a home with nice humans who pay lots of attention to him and no other cats to compete for attention he actually won't bite. Anyway, I'm happy for him.

I started writing this entry about fried dough trucks and redwinged blackbirds and then the war started so I put this aside to finish later. Don't know why I thought later would be any more appropriate. Spring continues to arrive.
