and a bald eagle

February 6, 2003

Washing the dishes and litter boxes goes faster on Thursday but without as much laughter. Somehow when I tell myself jokes it doesn't have the same effect as when Roy tells them. Same with reciting nonsense verse.

Stallone trashed his cage, upsetting food and litter and burying them in the bedding. He's new and I gather he's been living a comfy life in some lady's garage - well fed and cozy warm - until her husband ordered her to get rid of him because they're getting a puppy. Presumably the puppy isn't going to live in the garage, so I'm not sure what the problem is, but Stallone is here and not liking it much.

Two new kittens came in today. There are always more kittens. (Please pay/neuter your pet.) These two are cute as buttons and will find homes practically instantly.

I managed to finish the dishes and litter boxes before 11:00 so had plenty of time for lunch and a drive-by birding pass before making the trek to Cambridge. I was hoping to find short eared owls again but didn't see a single one. However, it seems wherever I looked there was another rough legged hawk. I saw at least 5, possibly 6. I wasn't sure whether the second dark morph one I saw was the same one I'd see a little ways up the road or a different one. At one point I had three of them in sight at the same time. They were all hunting over the clam flats just before the hill. As I was watching the three rough legged hawks, I noticed a dark speck higher in the sky and a little further west. Once I got focused on it, I was thrilled. It was an immature bald eagle! That is so cool. Five rough legged hawks and a bald eagle sure makes up for the lack of short eared owls!
