sweeping the parking lot

January 27, 2003

OK, this is weird. It snowed less than an inch last night and the crazy lady is out there frantically clearing off her car and her next door neighbor's car at 5:30 in the morning. Why am I even up? I I heard the Russian Speaking Dog barking but now all I see out the window is the crazy lady sweeping the parking lot with a plastic kitchen broom. Seriously, she is sweeping the snow out of the parking lot. There's not enough snow on the ground to shovel, so she's sweeping it.

Somehow I managed to go back to sleep and not wake up until around 9:00 when the phone rings with some business from the cat shelter. I look out the window when I get off the phone. The crazy lady is sprinkling ice melt around her car from a small paper cup. She inspects each spot and sprinkles a little more - a few grains at a time.

I go off to do errands and when I return, her car is surrounded by a circle of ice melt pellets. The car hasn't moved.

Hours later, the car still hasn't moved.
