A List of Environmental and Telecommunications Events and Issues

December 19, 1997 to January 2, 1998

For some inexplicable reason, there is nothing scheduled on the environmental or telecommunications front for the next two weeks. Therefore, this will be an abbreviated edition of "A List..." and the next edition will be published on January 2, 1998.

Take care and have a happy, merry, new.

Notes from a Pioneer on a Speck in Space

Few things that grow here poison us.
Most of the animals are small.
Those big enough to kill us do it in a way
Easy to understand, easy to defend against.
The air, here, is just what the blood needs.
We don't use helmets or special suits.

The Star, here, doesn't burn you if you
Stay outside as much as you should.
The worst of our winters is bearable.
Water, both salt and sweet, is everywhere.
The things that live in it are easily gathered.
Mostly, you can eat them raw with safety and pleasure.

Yesterday my wife and I brought back
Shells, driftwood, stones, and other curiosities
Found on the beach of the immense
Fresh-water Sea we live by.
She was all excited by a slender white stone which:
"Exactly fits the hand!"

I couldn't share her wonder;
Here, almost everything does.

Lew Welch wrote another poem ("Two Like Villanelles") in which he has the phrase "comin' on green to crack sidewalks." I was looking for that phrase when I found that poem. Looking for that phrase after my walk yesterday afternoon and the things I saw.

There's grapevine
and bamboo
where 3 cars park
on Franklin Street.

A block away
in either direction
are bearing
apples and apricots.

Shall we propagate them
throughout the city?

All you have to do is look to see the inescapable green. All you have to do is listen to hear every breath say "Thank you, thank you" to the rest of the Universe.

Much joy in the night-time of the year, the time of dreams, as we stir toward awakening.
