High pressure offshore this morning will continue moving seaward today, with warmer air aloft overspreading the area. This will result in mostly cloudy skies, with a chance of flurries or sprinkles along the south coast, including Cape Cod and the islands. In addition, as the high drifts farther offshore, a brisk southwest wind will develop across the region today. This will boost temperatures to 35 to 40° this afternoon. Tonight, low pressure will be gathering strength along the Virginia coast. This low will intensify overnight and especially Friday as it tracks northeast, passing about 125 miles southeast of Nantucket Friday afternoon. Its precipitation shield will overspread the region early Friday morning from south to north. The atmosphere will likely be cold enough Friday morning for the precipitation to begin as snow across much of the area. The exception will be across Cape Cod and the islands, where it will be warm enough to support rain. As the coastal storm tracks south of New England Friday, northeast winds off the relatively warm ocean waters will transport milder air into eastern Massachusetts, including the city of Boston and into much of Rhode Island. This will result in snow mixing with or changing to rain. However, across northeast Connecticut, including Hartford, central Massachusetts including Worcester, northwest Rhode Island and extending northeast into the northwest suburbs of Boston, the precipitation may remain all snow. This could yield several inches of accumulations across this area. Over western Massachusetts and southwest New Hampshire, the risk of appreciable snowfall may be less given the offshore storm track. However, the exact track and intensity of the coastal storm remains uncertain. Stay tuned to later forecasts and discussions on this developing coastal storm. === The weather observed at WORCESTER, MA at 07:54 AM EST was: === The skies were partly cloudy.
