The wind gusted to 48 mph at the Orange Massachusetts airport a little after midnight. Early morning temperatures ranged from the mid 30s to low 40s in most locations. The first day of the new year will be a sunny one across southern New England, as high pressure builds into the area. With a brisk west to northwest wind, temperatures will reach the upper 30s across the higher terrain of the Monadnocks and east slopes of the Berkshires, to the lower or mid 40s elsewhere. Clouds will be on the increase tonight, and there is a chance of light snow breaking out along and west of the Connecticut river valley toward daybreak. Low temperatures will range from the upper teens across southwest New Hampshire and northwest Massachusetts, to the low to mid 20s elsewhere. Friday will feature a chance of light snow, mainly in the morning, as a warm front moves through the region. Rain along the south coast and freezing rain or sleet over the interior may mix with the snow during the day. High temperatures will range mostly from the mid to upper 30s across the region. Looking ahead to the weekend, it looks as though southern New England will be near a battleground between cold air entrenched in Canada and much warmer air to our south. A series of low pressure areas will travel along a nearly stationary front from the Ohio valley to northern New England, and result in chance of rain Saturday afternoon into Sunday. There is a risk of rain changing to snow, sleet or freezing rain across southwest New Hampshire and much of northern and central Massachusetts for a time Sunday night. === ORH Terminal Aerodrome Forecast issued 1-Jan-2004 06:33 EST === 7am: 28010kt P6sm Sct050 8am: 30018g28kt P6sm Bkn050; Tempo 12-3pm: Sct050 3pm: 31012kt P6sm Sct200 10pm: 32005kt P6sm Bkn200 5am: Vrb03kt P6sm Ovc100
