Arctic air from the plains of central Canada continued to invade the region on a gusty northwest wind overnight. By daybreak, as winds diminished away from the shore, temperatures had dropped to 5 below zero in southern New Hampshire and the low lying areas of the lower Connecticut valley, to 15° on the islands. In spite of bright February sunshine, temperatures will struggle to reach the teens across the interior, and the lower 20s by the shore. Clear skies and a deep snow cover will allow for one of the coldest nights of the year tonight, with temperatures falling into the single numbers along the shore to as cold as 20 below zero in protected valley locations of northern Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire. Friday will be fair and continued cold with high temperatures only a few degrees milder than today. Looking ahead to the weekend, it appears that old man winter's grip will not last as long as January's frigid handshake. Temperatures will climb back to more seasonable normals, but with that slow climb will come the chance of more snow. === The weather observed at WORCESTER, MA at 07:54 AM EST was: === The skies were clear.
