I didnt know Greg well at all -- we only saw each other at the track, but he and I took New Racer School together and so there was a small bond between us. That and I was getting closer to catching up to him in 550 superbike... and he knew it. My last memory of him is coming off the track and yelling at him "next month, greg! I'm gonna get you!" and the big smile back from him. I realize that sort of camraderie might not make sense, but both Laguna Seca and Willow Springs had a silent hush Sunday morning in his memory. (Jamie Bowman and Joey Dunlop as well). Evans Brasfield and a bunch of the ex500 guys (Greg used to pit in EX-alley) came by on saturday and we were all in tears reminiscing about the FNG, but I really believe Greg, like so many of the bikers we've lost over the years would rather us continue to enjoy and promote the sport we love. Many of the us are running his number on our racebikes and will continue to do so... > Only other LAB-connected folks we ran into were Rick Damiani and > Jay McDaniel, I suppose because Friday night (especially the night before > an WSMC weekend) is a difficult one to spare. As much as Steve and I wanted to share our grief at the loss of Greg with his family and friends, it wasn't easy to have to miss the gathering. But having to pack and do all the last-minute necessities that would allow us to awaken before dawn and make the trek to Willow for the race weekend made our attendance impossible. Knowing how much Greg absolutely loved racing, I think if he is still able to, he would understand and perhaps even find our racing with him in our thoughts as fitting a tribute to his life and his passion.
