In times of uncertainty and change the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson
offer an important reminder that we need never feel powerless or out of
control. He writes, "What lies behind us and what lies before us are
tiny matters compared to what lies within us."
At Old South we know that there is much lying within us to offer hope
and strength. Here we have faith, a trust in God that is unshakable
even in the
shadow of the cross. Here we have worship, where we come together to
celebrate and nurture the love of Christ in this world. Here we have
service, efforts of generosity and caring that are inspired and transformed
by the Holy Spirit.
Appreciating our past and planning ahead for the future, we can be grateful
that so much lies within this church community. Moving from our summer
life together to a new fall season we are able to trust that God leads
us on through the grief of commemorating the first anniversary of September
11th to the joy of new Sunday School classes beginning, through the
sadness of Jim Crawford's retirement to the anticipation of welcoming new
men
and women into our midst. Here, in this gathering we call the Body
of Christ, we trust in the power of what lies within: it is the abiding
and
transforming love of God that we know in Jesus Christ.
