An open and affirming congregation of the United Church of Christ
What is it?
It’s a classic style of Christian worship, with a fresh twist. Following a timeless form, there are prayers, music, reflection, and Communion. But the whole experience is more open-ended, much like when a jazz musician reworks a familiar tune. If you’ve been to a Christian church many times, it will likely feel both familiar and fresh. If you’ve never been to church, you’ll find it easy to follow along in this relaxed approach.
Who is welcome?
Absolutely everybody. Always.
What will happen?
You’ll enter the beautiful Gordon Chapel to sounds of the Willie Sordillo Trio. You’ll be welcomed with words of hospitality for the congregation, and invited to greet someone near you. There’ll be moments for contemplation and singing, or just tapping your feet and listening. There will always be the opportunity to participate in Holy Communion, which we at Old South open to everyone. We’ll conclude with a blessing and more jazz!
Is there a cost?
There’s no fee. A voluntary offering is taken during the service.
How should I dress?
It’s Thursday evening, come however you’re dressed already! Some of us come in professional clothes, and some of us come in very casual clothes. It just doesn’t matter to us how you’re dressed. You’re always welcome here.
Who will lead it?
Saxophonist Willie Sordillo and various guest musicians team with ministers, Tadd Alman-Morton and Jeff VonWald, and with congregants.
When will it happen?
From 6:00 pm to about 6:45. There will also be time to have refreshments and meet new friends following the service.
How do I get there?
We’re practically on top of the Copley Square T-Stop, at 645 Boylston Street, directly across the street from the Boston Public Library.
