29-July-99 Packing

. .
.
I was going to write about security blankets, but I got too busy packing them all and now it's 11:48 and I have to be at the airport for an 8:45 AM flight to London and then on to Yerevan, so this had better be short.

I figure most of the stuff I carry around isn't stuff I need, but security blankets. That goes triple for traveling nine time zones away where you don't speak the language. If all goes well and Anne is really there Saturday evening, we'll do OK with her speaking Russian.

When I was in college I spent seven weeks in Europe on a youth hostel bicycle trip and mostly had a great time. Do you remember the single man hypothesis in The Andromeda Strain? The idea was that if you wanted to have someone who could make a quick decision, don't get a married person. An old married guy like me is accustomed to never doing anything without checking with his wife. I'm not so confident of doing everything on my own as I was when I was in college, so I'm somewhat nervous about this whole trip.

See you in ten days or so -- DB
