Cow Island Today Page

Return to Camp Idlewild Home Page

Just a quick report on my trip up to Lake Winnipesaukee last weekend. My family and I stayed in Laconia at the Margate. I rented a powerboat at Fay's Marina and headed out with my Kids for a cruise. After almost running into the Witch's Rocks twice I managed to overshoot Cow Island. I managed to head back the right way, cruising into the Echo Cove (intentionally).

From there I slowly puttered around the Island, checking out the developments at all the prime locations - Big Sandy, Don's Haven, Junior Beach. Really not bad - the density is reasonable - 5 acre zoning.

As I came around front there was the Mail Boat - just like I never left - stopped at the dock. The mailboat never stopped for long - right? Well this time, it did. Finally, I pulled around behind and waited for it to take off. Finally, it did and I pulled in to the old Sunfish dock.

I was greeted by a fellow with a beard almost a foot long and hair about twice that. He said "May I help you?" I said is that "George Randall?" "Yep? An who be you?" "Chuck Palmer", sez I. "Well your ears must have been burning because we were just talking about you". It turns out that my cousins (who were up for the reunion I was attending) were on the mailboat, talking to George and holding it up.

Mailboat Still Stops

George filled me in on visitors and goings on - The old mill was moved down to the Back cove near the Rowing area and is now part of a house. George is property manager for the owner's association.

Fred Kerrick, Oat and Rufus Mudge have passed away. Bud Hines and his wife live near Meridith. Jack Irving has retired (to Fla?). (I'll think of more...) Gus' lodge is still there, but is primarily only for dinner party's. Carl and Norma still live around there.

Anyway it turns out that Ed and Cal Roys still live on the Island during the summer. Tom lives in Gilford, and Fred is in the Air Force down in Va (pentagon duty) but I believe is a pilot as well.

Not much left of the Camp. Unfortunately I ran out of film. George lives in the old Outfit Building. The Music Room moved onto the Sr. Basketball court and is part of a house. Fred Kerrick's cabin, the Sailing lodge, and Middler 11 are still left. The dinning hall is gone, but the Junior basketball court is still there.

After a quick swim in the crib, my kids and I headed back. I left my E-mail address with George... The kids and I had a great time, and I was really good to see it all again.

BTW, Harrilla Landing is basically gone.

P.S. The driver of the Mail Boat? Bob Reed of SCUBA fame. Bob is a parttime teacher in the area and has taken on driving the Mail Boat and even the Mount Washington!
